I am studying abroad in Beijing, China for a semester and plan to travel around the country for a month after. I was wondering what would be the best way to manage my money while abroad. Would a prepaid travel card (Travelex or ARC) or traveler's check, or just a debit card connected to my account be best? Also would mastercard or visa be a better choice?

Answer:

Credit cards are gaining ground in China, with Visa, MasterCard, American Express (branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen), JCB and Diners Club the most common. Cards can be used in most mid to top-range hotels, Friendship and department stores, but cannot be used to finance your transportation costs. Cash advances can be made at head branches of the Bank of China (4% commission). Tipping is not really expected in mainland China - but bargaining is definitely OK. You can bargain in shops, street stalls, and hotels - but not in large stores.

ATMs that accept foreign cards are few and far between. Do not rely on them as a way of obtaining cash in Mainland China.

Consult with your bank before departing to make sure that your brand of cheque or credit card will be accepted.

Answer:
Some universities do not have age or educational background requirements. but generally is:
1/ Non-Chinese citizen in good health.
2/ 18 years old or above; (If you are under 18 years old, you need to provide a notarization of guarantor in China. Sometimes a diplomatic note presented by your consulate in Beijing may be required.)
3/ Hold a valid foreign passport.
4/ The equivalent of high school graduate or higher academic degree.
5/ Under normal circumstances, applicants for programs taught in Chinese are required to have passed the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) level 3 or above; or pass the university's entrance examination. (For more on the HSK certificate, please see Chinese Proficiency Test).

I am an american living in china. I want to get a degree here in china. What subjects can i take that are available to foreigners whom speak very little chinese? How much do they cost? and will math be a required subject?

Answer:

Most degrees from Chinese universities are NOT recognized internationally. If you opt to go this route, you will need to head to Shanghai or Beijing and enroll in a joint program with an internationally recognized institution of higher learning. Those programs are expensive.

Math is generally a required subject at some level. It depends upon the major.

V. The Application Procedure

2. On receiving the application and relevant materials, the International Student Office will send to qualified applicants Letter of Offer. Then the applicants should take a physical exam, and remit the tuition fees (please mail or fax the photocopy of the telegraphic transfer receipt)
3. CIE International Student Office will send to qualified applicants the International Student Confirmation-of-Enrolment and Visa application form for Study in China (JW202).
4. Admitted students should take the International Student Confirmation-of-Enrolment and Visa application form for Study in China (JW202) to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their country to apply for Student visa (X visa) or F Visa. (The original JW202 must be returned to students to take back to the Admission Office and the Embassy or Consulate can make a copy if necessary.)
5. Admitted students should take the International Student Confirmation-of-Enrolment and Visa application form for Study in China (JW202) to register at NJUT within the registration period mentioned in the International Student Confirmation-of-Enrolment. Exception can be made to students who have informed the College of their special reasons and have been granted permission for delay or their applications will be voided.
Notice: If you have no enough time to go through the above-mentioned procedure, you can come with tourist visa. It can be transferred to Student visa.

VI. Other information

Beijing Forestry University Application Information for International Students

I. Study period and Academic Schedule
The normal period of study for each program is as follows: 4 years for undergraduate degrees, 3 years for master’s degrees, and 3 years for doctoral degrees. Students may, in particular cases, reduce or extend the duration of study upon their application.
Beijing Forestry University divides each academic year into spring and autumn semesters, with the latter marking the commencement of the academic year. The autumn semester starts in September and ends in January of the next year, while the spring semester begins in February and ends in June. There will be a winter and a summer vacation every year. The summer vacation usually lasts for 2 months and there are various summer vacation courses available for students. The winter vacation typically lasts for 4 weeks and normally follows the schedule of Chinese New Year.

II. Programs
International students have the following options to study at Beijing Forestry University:

1. Programs for Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. Degrees
Undergraduate program: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4 to 6 years, to fulfill the regulated teaching program, to complete the undergraduate’s thesis and to defend for the thesis to a panel of experts. Upon graduation, the qualified students will receive a graduation certificate along with the bachelor’s degree.
Master's degree program: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 2-3 years, to fulfill the designated degree courses, to complete the master’s thesis and to defend for it to a panel of experts. Graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with the Master’s degree.
Ph.D. degree program: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4-6 years (in normal circumstances), to fulfill the designated degree courses, to conduct research, to complete the doctoral thesis and to defend for it to a panel of experts. Graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with the doctoral degree.

2. Programs for Visiting Students
Any overseas student wishing to make an advanced study at Beijing Forestry University but not for a degree or diploma may also be admitted. The period of study lasts from one semester to two years. After complete the refresher courses, the qualified students will receive a certificate.

3. Pre-university Program
This program lasts from one semester to two years. The students may receive a certificate rather than a degree or diploma.

4. Chinese Language Training Program
Long-term Chinese Language Training Program(about 16 weeks)
The program starts from the beginning of March and September each year, providing basic and practical Chinese courses. BFU provides courses on different levels (primary, secondary, advanced) to meet different students’ needs.
Course outlines：Chinese language, oral Chinese, listening comprehension，grammar, reading comprehension and writing etc.
Optional courses such as Chinese calligraphy, shadow boxing, shadow sword, and Chinese martial art will be arranged based on different interests and demands of the students. (Extra fee shall be paid for these optional courses besides tuition.)
The university provides activities, including sightseeing, watching Chinese opera or acrobatics for free per semester.
Short-term Chinese Language Training Program (2-8 weeks)
The program provides courses on oral Chinese, listening, and Chinese culture etc. Only group registration is accepted.

III. Qualifications for application
Foreigners who are over the age of 18, in good health condition, of good virtue, and willing to abide by the law of Chinese Government and by the regulations of BFU, with respect to Chinese culture can directly contact the international student office in BFU or visit the website www.studybeijing.com.cn to download the “Beijing Forestry University Application From”.

IV. Information of Application and Admission
Undergraduates, Master's Degree, and Ph.D. Students
Students should apply from March 1st to June 15th.
It takes approximate 8 to 10 weeks after the application deadline to receive the notifications of admission. We may inform you for missing materials according to your application process during this period. If admitted, we will send you the admission letter and other relevant documents. Inquiries are accepted in the International Student Office either by email or phone. Once pass the interview by BFU, the students will receive the Admission Certificate and the JW202 FORM for applying for a student visa (X visa) to China.
Due to our limited staff, we cannot reply promptly to all enquiries.
Chinese Language Training Students and Visiting Students
Students should apply from May 1st to August 31st or from November 1st to March 1st.
Students should fill out the application form, provide basic personal information and pay the application fees. Once pass the interview by BFU, the students will receive the Admission Certificate and the JW202 FORM for applying for a student visa (X visa) to China.

V. Admission
Admission will be determined according to the applicants’ educational background, their application materials and their performance in the interview. The result will be available on the website http:// www.studybeijing.com.cn.
. The Admission Notice 'and the attached documents can be obtained from the International Student Office in BFU by E-mail.
Applicants are expected to bring the passport, “University Admission Notice”, the original documents of "Visa Application Form for Study in China"（JW202, the health examination certificate (including lung X-rays, blood test, EKG), and visa with them to Beijing Forestry University for the registration within the required period specified in the Admission Notice.

VI. Application for Scholarship from Chinese Government
Any prospective students who are interested in this scholarship should apply for it from their own government and related institutes or the Chinese Embassy therein from January to April. For detailed information, please visit the website: http://www.csc.edu.cn.
The students who are interested in the Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship could apply to BFU directly.
Any student study in China wants to pursue a higher degree with scholarship should get the permission from both the embassies of their own countries in China and the universities they are studying.

VII. Medical Insurance
Beijing Forestry University requires that all the international students have a sufficient medical insurance throughout the duration of study. The insurance is expected to cover at least Accident Insurance and Hospitalization. Students can either get the insurance either in their home countries or in China. Foreign students should submit the documents from their insurance companies upon registration. The documents are expected to be written in Chinese or English.
Students fail to submit the insurance documents will not be admitted for registration.

VIII. Accommodation information
There are housing facilities for international students at BFU. We provide the international students with double room including bathroom, shower, TV, telephone, refrigerator, air conditioner, wardrobe, desk, and the network facilities. (No cooking is allowed in the room). The electric bill will be paid by the students themselves.
Students can also choose to live off campus, in which case they must register in the local police station.

Admission Guide of Xidian University International Undergraduate Students

Qualification for Admission
Willingness to abide by the laws of China, observe the regulations of Xidian University, respect the habits and customs of the Chinese people.
Over the age of 18, in good health, having Health Certificate by the Chinese government, holding senior high school graduation diploma, having the passport.
Chinese proficiency of HSK band 3. Those who haven’t passed the HSK band 3 can apply for the Chinese Language Program in Xidian University, and take the HSK examination subsequently.

Application Procedure
Candidates are supposed to submit the following materials to School of International Education before May 30th
Application Form for International Students in Xidian University (Download from http://sie.xidian.edu.cn)
Foreigner Physical Examination Form
High School Graduation Diploma, courses taken in high school and academic record. Would-be graduates should offer proof for high school enrollment.
Certificate of HSK (If available)
Financial support statement(more than 100,000RMB)
All of the information above should be either in Chinese or in English, or accompanied by English translation.

Application fee: 400RMB

Qualifying Examination
School of International Education will censor applicants’ qualifications jointly with related departments after receiving the application material and fee and admit the best applicants. Admission is in three forms: open enrollment; interview; written examination and interview.
School of International Education will inform applicants of the mode, time and place for written examination and interview by telephone or E-mail.
Matriculation results will be announced on the SIE website （http://sie.xidian.edu.cn）before July 15th every year, and meanwhile the written Admission Letter and Visa Application for Study in China (JW202 Form) will be sent out.

Registration Procedure
Freshmen are supposed to hold the Admission Letter for registration. Physical reexamination will be carried out by Xidian University. If the applicant’s health condition fails to meet the requirements, the admission will be canceled.
Freshmen are supposed to register on the prescribed date. Those who cannot register on time for special reasons are supposed to apply to the University for leave in a written form. Those who do not register for no reason within 2 weeks will be denied admission.

Length of Schooling and Fees
The duration for the Bachelor’s program is 4 years. The tuition fee is 17,000RMB/year, by relevant regulations of Ministry of Education and Xidian University. Students are supposed to pay their tuition fee before registration on a yearly basis.
Accommodation Fee: 30RMB/day/persom, 12m2 signal room.
Living expenses: estimated at RMB 30/day on the basis of the price and living expensive of Xi’an City. (Only for reference)

China Agricultural University offers 64 undergraduate programs to international students. The undergraduate programs have a schooling system of 4 years, except that the veterinary medicine program requires 5 years. The programs are delivered in Chinese. Bachelor’s degree and graduation certificate are awarded to those who have finished all the course work required and passed thesis defense.

2. Qualification of Applicants
Foreign citizens under 25 and in good health, with:
(1) Certificate of Graduation from senior high school;
(2) Certificate of HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Band 5/new HSK Band 4 or above.

3. Materials for Application (in duplicate)
(1) The completed APPLICATION FORM FOR FOREIGNER WISHING TO STUDY AT CAU, signed by the applicant

4. Application Procedure
The applicants shall submit the signed hardcopy of The Application Form (http://oir.cau.edu.cn or http://study-at-cau.org), together with other application materials to Office of International Relations, China Agricultural University, by post mail or in person.

5. Application Deadline
The deadline for the application materials arrival at OIR is April 30 each year. The university will process application after the deadline.

6. Review and Examination
The admission committee will review the application materials and select applicants for further examinations or interviews which are requested by some department/schools. The applicants will be informed two weeks before the examinations or interviews. Students, with excellent performance both in conduct and study who have finished one level of study in China and continue to pursue a higher level degree study in China, can be enrolled by CAU without enrollment examinations.

7. Inquiry and Admission Notice
The applicants will be admitted after they pass the examinations or interviews. Admission Notice, Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202 Form), and Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners will be issued in early July each year. Prior to this, the applicants may check for admission status via on the website of Office of International Relations, CAU.

8. Visa Application and Admission Registration
The admitted applicants should bring their Passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202 or JW201), and Original copy of Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners as well as other original documents of physical examination to the Embassy or Consulate of the People\'s Republic of China, and apply for a student visa (X visa). In autumn every year, the students shall come to Office of International University, China Agricultural University for admission registration before the deadline indicated on the Admission Notice. The X visa holders must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arrival in China.

1. Introduction
China Agricultural University now offers 136 Master and 71 Doctoral programs to international students （see appendix for catalog of graduate programs）. Master’s programs are usually completed in 2-3 years, and Doctoral programs 3-4 years. Certificates of degrees and graduation will be awarded to those who have completed the entire course work and passing thesis/dissertation defense.

(1) Applicants for Master\'s programs should have a Bachelor\'s degree or equivalent academic background.
(2) Applicants for Doctoral programs should have a Master\'s degree or equivalent academic background.
(3) Language skills requirements:
(a) For programs taught in Chinese: Applicants should pass Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) band
3 or new HSK band 4.
(b) For Graduate Programs in English: See the requirements of the program.

3. Materials for Application (in duplicate)
(1) The completed APPLICATION FORM FOR FOREIGNER WISHING TO STUDY AT CAU, signed by the applicant ;
(2) The original or the notarized photocopies of degree certificate or proof of education in academic institution, and academic transcript, original and duplicated;
(3) HSK certificate and scores report or the notarized photocopy (unless a waiver is approved or Master\'s Programs offered in English);
(4) Two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professorship or higher （must show referee’s phone number and email address on the letter）;
(5) A study or research plan written in Chinese or in English (no less than 800 words)
(6) A photocopy of the passport and tree recent ID photos (white background, 35mm×45mm in size) and email the photo to cauie@cau.edu.cn;
(7) Copy of the page with personal information the passport (ordinary passport);
(8) Published academic papers or other academic achievements (if applicable)
(9)Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (available at http://www.csc.edu.cn/uploads/forms/foreinphy.pdf) (provided by Chinese quarantine authority. Applicants are expected to keep the original copies to apply entry to China) filled in English or Chinese. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. The medical examination results will be valid for 6 months. All applicants are kindly requested to take this factor into consideration while determining the time to take the medical examination.
The certificates provided should be the original documents in Chinese or in English, otherwise notarized translations in Chinese or English are required. None of the above materials will be returned.

4. Application Procedure
The applicants shall submit the signed hardcopy of The Application Form (http://oir.cau.edu.cn or http://study-at-cau.org), together with other application materials to Office of International Relations, China Agricultural University, by post mail or in person.

For applicants of Master’s programs offered in English, the hardcopies of application materials should be submitted to the relevant departments/schools.

5. Application Deadline
The deadline for the application materials arrival at OIR is April 30 each year. The university will process application after the deadline.

6. Review and Examination
The admission committee will review the application materials and select applicants for further examinations or interviews which are requested by some department/schools. The applicants will be informed two weeks before the examinations or interviews. Students, with excellent performance both in conduct and study who have finished one level of study in China and continue to pursue a higher level degree study in China, can be enrolled by CAU without enrollment examinations.

7. Inquiry and Admission Notice
The applicants will be admitted after they pass the examinations or interviews. Admission Notice, Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202 Form), and Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners will be issued in early July each year. Prior to this, the applicants may check for admission status via on the website of Office of International Relations, CAU.

8. Visa Application and Admission Registration
The admitted applicants should bring their Passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202 or JW201), and Original copy of Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners as well as other original documents of physical examination to the Embassy or Consulate of the People\'s Republic of China, and apply for a student visa (X visa). In autumn every year, the students shall come to Office of International University, China Agricultural University for admission registration before the deadline indicated on the Admission Notice. The X visa holders must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arrival in China.

1. Introduction
China Agricultural possesses advanced research facilities and rich teaching resources. Foreign students who are willing to take courses or do research at China Agricultural University as a visiting student may apply to Office of International Relations, China Agricultural University. It is suggested that before submitting applications, the applicants ask for advice from their supervisor/tutor in home institution and discuss with relevant department/school of China Agricultural University.
The schooling system for visiting students ranges from 1 semester to 2 years. A non-degree certificate of advanced study will be awarded if the visiting student successfully finishes his/her study at China Agricultural. Official transcripts are also available upon request.

2. Qualification of Applicants
General Visiting Students: at least one year study at college or higher, HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Band Four or above.
Senior Visiting Students: Master degree or higher, HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Band Four or above.
The applicants who have good English competence and are capable of taking English-taught courses may ask for lowering the requirement or waiver of HSK

Application for spring semester program: October 15 - December 15 (previous year)

6. Review and Examination
The application materials will be reviewed and examined by Office of International University, China Agricultural University and the Admission Committee of the department concerned.

7. Inquiry and Admission Notice
Once approved, the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Foreigners (JW202) will be issued in early January for spring program or early July for autumn program. Prior to this, the applicants may check for admission status via on the website of Office of International Relations.

8. Visa Application and Admission Registration
The admitted students should bring their Passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form for Foreigners, the Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners and Blood Test Record to the Embassy or Consulate of the People’s Republic of China and apply for a student visa. The X visa holders must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arriving in China. Compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan should have valid entry permits.

1. Language courses: Listening, Oral Chinese, Reading and so on;
