Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (YUTCM), established in 1960, is among the second group of TCM universities set up nationwide. The university is located in Kunming, the picturesque provincial capital of Yunnan, with scenic splendors and spring-like weather all-year round. With 46 years of development, the university now is able to award master degrees and has set up two campuses in sequence: Bai Ta campus and Guan Shang campus. Presently the university is constructing the third one which is located in Cheng Gong near Kunming covers an area of over 546,940 square meters and the total construction area is 270,000 square meters, which will be finished in the autumn of 2008. The university has cultivated ten thousands doctors of various levels and specialties. The university has more than 10,000 students, 1,200 staff members.

The university owns a team of teachers who are of a high sense of duty, high levels, high credentials and high competence, including1 doctor and 1 co-cultivate doctor mentors, 83 master mentors, 221 professors, 333 associate professors, one of them once made a nationwide recognized contribution, three of them made provincially recognized contributions, 7 of them enjoy state-awarded special allowances for experts, 3 of them enjoy province-awarded special allowance for experts. Further more, 22 of them enjoy the reputation of famous TCM doctors or honorary famous TCM doctors. At the same time, some well-known experts and scholars from both home and abroad are invited to work as honorary professors, guest professors and part-time professors. Thus the intelligent and diligent faculty members constitute the mainstay of well-trained and high-qualified practioners of T.C.M.

The university focuses on the education of undergraduate and post-graduates while enrolls pre-undergraduates and students of higher vocational education. Now the university grants doctor’s degree in two programs together with Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Also it grants first-rank discipline master degree in three programs, secondary discipline master degree in 16 programs including 40 research fields. Besides, the university has 14 undergraduate specialties and research fields ranging from medicine, science, technology and management, 9 pre-undergraduate and higher vocational education programs.

The university consists of four faculties, three departments, a branch college and a center: the Faculty of Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, the Faculty of Basic Medicine, the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, a branch College of Adult Education, the Department of Postgraduate, the Department of Social Science, the Department of Humanities and Physical Education, the Faculty of Acupuncture and Moxibustion and the International Exchange and Cooperation Center. At present, the university has 1 prior discipline in the west part of China at State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine level, 5 prior disciplines at provincial level, 11 research organizations, 8 comprehensive laboratories established (with 24 special sub-laboratories), 2 prior laboratories at the level of university(molecular biology laboratory and the laboratory for reproducing fine varieties of Chinese Medicine plants), 1 TCM specimen museum in which Shen Nong Ben Cao specimen room and Dian Nan Ben Cao specimen room that are peculiar to the universities of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. Also the university owns 4 affiliated hospitals, 6 teaching hospitals, 20 hospitals for clinical practice, 27 practice areas for medical teaching and many outpatient departments. All of them focus on TCM yet pay attention to western medicine. All together the hospital offer more than 6000 beds and 66 teaching and training stations for medicinal units.

The university emphasizes on academic exchanges and cooperation. In 1990, the university in combination with Spain established “Yunnan-China---Catalonia Spain college of Traditional Chinese Medicine”, which turned out to be one of the Sino-Spanish governmental communication and cooperation programs. Also the university signed with organizations and universities such as European Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Aamc-Ankang Alternative Medical Center, Victoria University of Australia, Prince of Songkla University and Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, etc.Cooperation?Agreement to start programs like TCM training and education.

The university was conferred the right to enroll international students and students from Hongkong, Macao, and Taiwan for diploma education. The University has begun to enroll international students since 1970s, and is one of the first universities of Traditional Chinese Medicine to enroll international students. So far, the university has cultivated hundreds of well-rounded international students over 10 countries and regions. After their graduation, most of them engaged in teaching, medical treatment and scientific research in their countries independently, spreading the seeds of TCM and bridging TCM with many countries.

The university carries out Nation’s policies and Chinese Ministry of Education’s regulations for international students earnestly. With “educating people by means of teaching, managing and serving them” a guiding principle, the university actively carries out the job concerning international students’ study in China. Each branch of the university cooperates with each other to form an effective management system. After some groping, the university has set up a complete set of international student’s management system which becomes more and more scientific and systematic.

With the authorization of Yunnan Provincial Department of Education, the university has become one of the universities, which has the right to enroll students awarded Yunnan Government Scholarship from Thailand, Burma, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
