Taiyuan Institute of Electric Power was founded in 1955. The institute was designated by the former State Commission Education as one of the exemplary key engineering institutes in China in 1997. The institute, affiliated with the Ministry of Electricity, is supervised by the government of Shanxi Province and jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and local government and renamed Engineering College of Shanxi University (ECSU) after authorized by the government to unite herself with Shanxi University. SUEC has greatly improved its academic programs and developed into a college with its distinguishing feature. While focusing on engineering, it offers 2 masters degree programs, 10 bachelors degree programs and 14 programs for three-year students, including Electrical Engineering and Automation, Thermal Energy and Dynamical Engineering, Automation, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Art, Business Administration, Electronic Information Engineering, Architectural Environment and Equipment Engineering, Engineering Management, Environment Engineering etc. At present, there are more than 6,000 full-time students and more than 3,000 students of adult education. At present there are 248 professional teachers including 16 professors, 99 associate professors, 20 teachers with Ph.D. degrees or taking the Ph.D. programs, 91 teachers with Mater degrees. Over the past 51 years, the College has educated over 30,000 graduates for power industry and other fields and makes greater contributions to the society. Situated in the capital of Shanxi province, the campus covers an area of 243 acres, in which is 176,300 square meters of floor space. The teaching facilities includes teaching blocks, lab blocks, library, artificial units center, computer center, language lab, dormitory buildings, multifunctional sport hall etc. There are more than 50 labs, shops or factories for training students in practical skills, including metalworking practice shops, electrical and electronic engineering practice shops. The colleges houses the teaching and research instruments with a total value of RMB47 million. The College Library has a floor space of 3887 square meters and the digital library of holding a collection of books and journals amounting to 500,000 volumes has been put into use. The 600MW, 500MW and the 300MW artificial units in our Artificial Units Center, which are multi-model units in the same hard system with the function of all-kinds of scope and full range control process thermal electric generation are up to the international level. The center is authorized by State Labor and Social Security Ministry as “National Professional Skill Expertise Station” for high-capacity generation units with central control operation and chosen as deputy director by the artificial units training cooperation network of Chinese electrical enterprises. Currently, the college has a national level “third-generation campus network” with the assembling of sound and data which connects various places of the campus such as offices, classroom, laboratories, dormitories, teachers’ apartments by the flat forms of information management, virtual education and virtual culture and provides an arena for the studying, handling official business, testing, and exchanging of the students and faculty. The College focuses on teaching and researching and advances the construction of academic disciplines and essential courses. Two achievements in scientific research, with international level, have been authenticated. Great efforts have been spent on the teaching administration and the construction of spiritual civilization as a result a breakthrough was made in the reform of educational system. From 2001-2003 the college was awarded “Taiyuan Civilization Institution” for three successive years, and “Taiyuan Civilization Model” in 2004, and “Shanxi May 1st Labor Medal” in April 2003, and “Shanxi Civilization Model” in 2005. The college always adheres to the principles of turning her attention to Shanxi Province, to the electrical industry, to the world and practices the educational model of “non-probation” to educate her students which evokes wide repercussions.
